    Collapse Pain Management in Gynecologic Oncology and the Opioid Crisis

    SGO presents a webinar on opioid use in gynecologic oncology with speakers from SGO's Education Committee, including Shannon Grabosch, MD, John Geisler, MD, and Allison Puechl, MD.  This timely discussion will outline the scope of the opioid epidemic and what practitioners in gynecologic oncology can do to improve post-surgical prescription and dosing practices. In addition, presenters will provide resources for regulating and monitoring as well as safe disposal practices. 

    At the end of this webinar, participants should be able to:
    Describe non-narcotic options for post-operative pain management
    Use restrictive opioid practices to adequately control post-operative pain. 
    Counsel patients regarding expectations for post-operative pain and the benefits of limiting opioid use.

    With the use of robot assisted gynecologic surgery there are significant benefits to the patient but there are also several unique challenges with this type of surgery.  The objective will be to describe these challenges from the perspective of the anesthesia team to an audience of non-anesthesiologists.  The talk will help identify which patients are at higher risk and outline the necessary pre-operative workup for patients with suspected gynecologic malignancy.  Special focus and discussion will take place regarding intra-operative challenges including safe positioning, optimizing ventilation, and other anesthetic issues during surgery.  It will end with the post-operative concerns and management options for these patients.

    Collapse Use of Opioids in Gynecologic Oncology Educational Series

    The Palliative Care Task Force presents this 4-part online educational module series addressing the use of opioids in gynecologic oncology.  The series is aimed at practitioners in gynecologic oncology and reviews best practices and cases relevant to the use of opioids in women's cancer care. The series starts with an introduction to opioids and different times through the course of cancer care in which opioids are used.  Part 2 is a practical case-based primer on opioid conversion, escalation, and rotation.  Part 3 focuses on common toxicities of opioid use.  And Part 4 concludes with a review of the current landscape of the opioid epidemic and regulatory issues.  We hope this series will be a practical guide to gynecologic oncology providers regarding their use of opioids for women with cancer.
